The Nkul is the ancestral talking drum of the Ekang people. For generations, it has served as a sophisticated communication tool, transmitting messages over long distances through the dense equatorial forests of Central Africa.
By naming our association Nkul Ekang Y'America, we honor this tradition of communication and gathering. We strive to be the modern "Nkul" that calls upon all sons and daughters of the Ekang diaspora to unite, share, and thrive together in the United States.
Who We Are
Nkul Ekang Y America is a vibrant community of the Ekang diaspora residing in North America. The Ekang people, primarily from Cameroon, Gabon, and Equatorial Guinea, comprise a group of closely related Bantu ethnic clusters including the Beti, Bulu, and Fang. We share a common language family, a warrior heritage, and a deep-rooted oral tradition.
Our organization serves as a bridge between our ancestral traditions and the modern American landscape. We provide a support network for newcomers, a platform for professional growth, and a guardian for our cultural identity, ensuring that our unique values continue to inspire future generations.
The Spirit of the Mvet
At the heart of our culture lies the Mvet—both a sacred musical instrument and an epic cycle of oral literature. The Mvet bards tell the stories of the immortal warriors of Engong, representing the idealized strength, wisdom, and resilience of the Ekang people. This spirit of resilience and intellectual depth guides our mission in the United States.
Our History & Origins
Our history is one of movement and perseverance. Tracing our origins back to the Adamaoua Plateau, our ancestors undertook the Great Migration southward into the equatorial forests. A defining moment in our collective memory is the legendary crossing of the Sanaga River (Yom), marking our entry into the lands we call home today.
Founded in 2015 in Washington, D.C., Nkul Ekang Y America was born from the need to recreate the solidarity of our ancestral clans in a new land. Today, we have grown into a nationwide organization, representing a dynamic community that contributes significantly to the American fabric while staying firmly rooted in its African origins.
